When Slipknot’s Dave Grohl Is on a Train

Slipknt frontman Dave Grohn is not on a train.

On a Saturday night in September, Grohl, guitarist Tom Morello and drummer Zach Hill walked into a bar in the New York City borough of Queens and had an interesting conversation.

The trio had just started writing a song called “The Man Who Killed the Electric Chair” for the upcoming LP, The Last Kiss, and it was the first time they’d played together in nearly two years.

The song was written by Grohl’s longtime girlfriend, Kristin Chenoweth.

It features Grohl and Chenowets son, Michael Chenowith, playing in a garage and performing together as a group.

“We were just thinking, What if this song is about a guy that was trying to kill the electric chair, and this guy is just a guy trying to play it to me?”

Chenowiths son said.

“And then, we just kind of started talking about it.”

The band played the song live at a local bar, and Grohl sang along.

“It’s a really weird song,” Grohl said.

Chenowiths voice cracked as she sang, “You’re my father, my son, my friend.”

It’s not the first pop song to include Grohl as an author, but it is one of the first to be written by an American.

The title of the song, written by Chenowes son, is an anagram of Grohls last name, and the lyric that is written about Grohl is, “I want to be a part of something bigger.”

Grohl said the song has been a hit in its home country, the United States, and he hopes it will resonate with his fans there.

“I think the American people have grown up in a culture where music is important to them,” he said.

“It’s really important to me to connect with a part in a song that’s important to the song’s author, and also connect with the fans, and I think that’s a beautiful thing.”

When Chenowises son finished singing, the rest of the band joined in.

Grohl went on to perform the song.

“We’re all gonna get to the end, so I think we’ll all go home,” Chenowetts son said, “but the next time we get on a plane, we’re going to get to Disneyland and we’re gonna have our Disneyland-inspired Halloween party.”
